because there’s nothing more important than running your life.

Running a startup is hard enough; running a startup during a pandemic is unimaginable.

The decisions you have to make, the problems you have to solve in such a short amount of time, really puts a challenge in front of you. We have been going through this now for almost 60 days. In these 60 days, we had to reduce our headcount and transition out of offices.

What if COVID is a natural process too? A method of us having to heal ourselves, our families and businesses, ultimately refining how we build?

Amongst the chaos and some of the hardest decisions of our life — we are the strongest and the most focused we have ever been. When running a business, it is your training and hard work that provides you with the right tools you need to achieve your goals. The more you train mentally, the better prepared you become to meet challenges head-on.

And there will be challenges.

While I was in this intense, uncomfortable workout called Chief, I felt a connection to all the Chiefs out there striving to survive and thrive through this global pandemic.

One thing I realized over the years is just like working out; running a business is a painful process. — mentally as well as physically — but the more you’re working out, the less it hurts over time.

Pain is temporary, but growth is forever.

I think there are a lot of similarities between working out and running a business. Sometimes you have to break the muscle down to gain strength.

Why do we get sore during our workouts?

During exercise, you stress your muscles and the fibers begin to break down. As the tissues repair themselves, they become larger and stronger than they were before- it’s a natural process.

What if COVID is a natural process too? A method of us having to heal ourselves, our families and businesses, ultimately refining how we build?

It’s hard to make sense of it, but perhaps the silver lining is there.

My heart goes out to all the Chiefs that had to make the hardest decisions of their lives.

A real Chief acts with dignity and empathy. It’s what connects us all. We’re all humans.

To all the Chiefs out there:

Let’s unite on the strength that we have in us and the reality that sometimes things have to break to help us become the strongest we can be.

Pain is temporary, but growth is forever.

Here’s the workout in case you wanted to try it.

“The Chief

Max rounds in 3 minutes of:

Power cleans, 3 reps

6 Push-ups

9 Squats

Rest 1 minute. Repeat for a total of 5 cycles.

The Chief is considered a Hero workout — Each year in the United States Navy, a highly qualified and elite cadre of Sailors are selected and promoted to the join the ranks of Chief Petty Officer. Since 1893, “The Chiefs” have been relied upon by subordinates and superiors alike for their personal example, technical expertise and above all, their unique leadership capabilities.

As the induction process for newly selected Chief Petty Officers is now underway throughout the US Navy, we thought it appropriate to inaugurate “The Chief” in honor and recognition of all past and present CPOs. Thanks to them and their families for their self-sacrifice, ability to adapt, tireless dedication to mission and devotion to country.
